The sublime truth of suffering

_______________________________________

Realising thus:
“Suffering is natural
Suffering is unavoidable
Suffering is a condition of life
Therefore
Suffering is meaningful.”
One finally learns to accept suffering
To contemplate it
And to respond to it differently
Perhaps with thoughtfulness
When one feels it.

But imagining thus:
“Suffering is unnatural
Suffering is avoidable
Suffering is an anomaly of life
Therefore
Suffering is without meaning.”
One does not find the path
To the acceptance of suffering.
One does not know how to contemplate it
And responds to it with aversive rejection.

One who has realised and pondered
The universal nature of suffering
Develops an open heart
Despite of himself
He grows gentle and compassionate
Towards all that suffers,
No!
Towards all that feels!

One who is blind to the first of all
Sublime truths
And does not see that everyone is a sufferer,
That one who transgresses
Does so because he suffers,
One who hates and harms
Does so because he suffers,
He develops a shrunken heart
Despite of himself
He grows scared and paranoid
Self-concerned,
Self-obsessed,
Callous and cruel
Towards all that hurts,
No!
Towards all that lives!

Friends,
One who perseveres in accepting and contemplating suffering
Will at last transcend suffering.
One who persists in refusing and escaping suffering
Will only suffer even more.
